Andy Hetzel,  Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan's Vice President of Corporate Communications, will be joining us to offer insights into why healthcare costs have gone up, as well as helpful tips on how to manage those health expenses.

Since the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, the entire health care system has experienced significant and accelerated economic pressures. Expensive medical care, prescription drug prices growing at rates well above inflation and surging utilization have put enormous pressure on health insurance costs. Health insurance companies, individuals and employers are feeling the financial impacts.

In April 2025, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan launched an affordability campaign aimed at highlighting the factors driving health care costs and how Blue Cross is responding. The affordability equation is complex. Blue Cross is making it easier for the public to understand the relationship between hospital prices, medical care costs, prescription drug prices, technology, administrative costs and other upstream factors on the health insurance costs they pay. As Michigan’s largest health insurer, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan has a responsibility to connect with individuals and businesses to explain these trends, pricing decisions, and underscore what actions are being taken to respond to these pressures.
